Quando si usa -1
Per esprimere azioni che sono iniziate prima e
sono continuate dopo un momento preciso nel
passato:
Last night at 10 o’clock I
was reading a book.

Stava succedendo
in quel momento.
Quando si usa -2
Per parlare di un’azione o di un’attività in corso
nel passato, che viene interrotta da un’altra azione:
While I was studying I
heard a loud noise up stairs

Ha sentito il rumore
durante l’azione
descritta con il Past
continuous.
Quando si usa -3
Per parlare di due azioni che hanno avuto luogo
contemporaneamente nel passato:
While I was working in the
house the children were
outside playing.

Le due azioni accadevano

Il Past continuous si usa anche:
• Nelle descrizioni, specialmente dell’ambiente:
It was a fine day. The sun was shining and the birds

• Per descrivere come erano vestite le persone:
