Passato prossimo. Past perfect
The Italian passato prossimo, is composed of the present tense of the auxiliary verbs avere or
essere + the part participle of the main verb.
The majority of verbs use the auxiliary avere. However, some intransitive verbs use the auxiliary
essere. These verbs are generally motion verbs or state verbs.
When the passato prossimo is formed with the auxiliary essere, the past participle must much the
gender and number of the subject.
Examples of usage:
auxiliary essere
Sara è arrivata. Sara has arrived
Paolo è arrivato. Paolo has arrived
auxiliary avere
Sara ha mangiato. Sara has eaten
Paolo ha mangiato. Paolo has eaten
