L'esito della prima di Ernani al Teatro La Fenice di Venezia nel 1844 non fu all'altezza delle aspettative di Verdi, principalmente a causa delle
precarie condizioni di salute di alcuni cantanti. Tuttavia, soprattutto a partire dalle recite successive, sia la critica sia il pubblico non esitarono a
entusiasmarsi alla nuova opera del Maestro. Quest'opera contiene alcune delle melodie verdiane più riuscite e appassionate (la cavatina di
Elvira e il cantabile di Silva in primis) ed è indubbia un'evoluzione sul piano della strutturazione drammaturgica, più coesa e meno a blocchi di
numeri chiusi. Nonostante una tormentata "prima" Ernani divenne un vero e proprio successo internazionale, a cominciare dalle fortunate recite viennesi del maggio/giugno 1844.
Il cast riunito per questa produzione del Teatro Regio di Parma è tra i migliori di oggi in questo tipo di repertorio.
The première of Ernani at Venices' Teatro La Fenice in 1844 failed to come up to Verdi's expectations, primarily because of the poor health of
some of the singers. Both critics and audiences, however, soon warmed to Ernani, especially after the following performances. The opera contains some of Verdi's most successful, impassioned arias (first and foremost Elvira's cavatina and Silva's cantabile) and clearly denoted an evolution in terms of dramatic structure, more cohesive and with lesser use of blocks of closed numbers. Despite a turbulent 'premiere', Ernani
became a real international success, beginning with the felicitous Vienna productions of May/June 1844. The cast of this Teatro Regio of Parma
production features some of today's best singers for this type of repertoire.

L'apparizione di Rossini sulle scene italiane ebbe l'effetto non di una ventata d'aria fresca, ma di un autentico tornado. Se confrontiamo infatti
una qualunque opera comica del Rossini esordiente con quelle dei suoi migliori predecessori, come ad esempio Paisiello e Cimarosa, noteremo subito il deciso cambiamento di ritmo che Rossini imprime alla vicenda da lui messa in musica, qualunque essa sia. Tutto ciò è evidente in
maniera perfin plateale in uno dei maggiori capolavori comici del Pesarese, L'Italiana in Algeri, che Rossini scrisse per il teatro San Benedetto
di Venezia e andò in scena il 22 maggio 1813. L'Italiana in Algeri ebbe, fin da subito, accoglienze trionfali, vista l'assoluta, strepitosa qualità
musicale della partitura. L'opera, com'è noto, mette in scena le vicende dell'astuta Isabella, un'italiana prigioniera del sultano Mustafà, che ormai
stufo delle sue mogli docili e sottomesse, desidera una nuova moglie che gli sappia tener testa: cosa che Isabella riesce a fare fin troppo bene,
irretendo e portando alla disperazione il sultano, per tornarsene alla fine in patria in compagnia dell'amato Lindoro e dello spasimante Taddeo.
Rappresentata al ROF di Pesaro la scorsa estate, Donato Renzetti dirige l'Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Nel cast Marianna Pizzolato,
Marco Vinco, Barbara Bargnesi, Maria José Lo Monaco, Alex Esposito, Maxim Mironov e Bruno De Simone.
Rossini's appearance on Italian stages was not a breath of fresh air, it was a real tornado. If we compare any comic opera by the young Rossini
with those, even among the best, of his finest predecessors, like Paisiello and Cimarosa, the first thing we notice is the marked change of rhythm
that Rossini applies to the event he is setting, whatever it may be. All this can be seen most clearly in one of Rossini's greatest comic masterpieces, L'Italiana in Algeri, an opera which Rossini wrote for the San Benedetto theatre in Venice, staged on 22nd May 1813. L'Italiana in Algeri
was immediately greeted with triumphant receptions, nor indeed could it have failed to be, given the absolutely dazzling musical quality of the
score. The opera, as we know, portrays the adventures of the astute Isabella, Italian prisoner of the sultan Mustapha, who has wearied of his
docile, submissive wives and seeks a new wife who can stand up to him: in this Isabella succeeds all to well, wrapping the sultan around her
finger and then reducing him to despair as she finally returns to Italy with her beloved Lindoro and suitor Taddeo. Staged at the Rossini Opera
Festival last summer, with Donato Renzetti conducting the Orchestra of Teatro Comunale di Bologna, this production is interpreted by Marianna
Pizzolato, Marco Vinco, Barbara Bargnesi, Maria José Lo Monaco, Alex Esposito, Maxim Mironov and Bruno De Simone.

E' singolare come la carriera discografica di alcuni dei più grandi artisti del XX secolo non sia stata pari alla loro grandezza. La discografia di
Erich Kleiber, ad esempio, è vergognosamente irrisoria se confrontata con quella di altri direttori che rispetto a lui non valevano, ad essere ottimisti, neppure la metà, ma che certo nel momento più fulgido della loro carriera non furono costretti a lasciare l'Europa quando il Nazismo
trionfante obbligò i musicisti ebrei che operavano in Austria e Germania ad abbandonare il loro paese. Il nostro doppio CD offre una scelta di
alcune indimenticabili interpretazioni del direttore austriaco, dalla stupefacente Incompiuta di Schubert del 1935, registrata in studio con i
Berliner Philharmoniker, alla straziante Patetica di Ciaikovskij del 1955, uno dei vertici assoluti della sua discografia. Il tutto presentato in un
remastering digitale di elevatissima qualità tecnica.
It is curious that the recording career of some of the best artists of our century should not reflect their real worth: the recordings featuring Erich
Kleibcr, for example, are ridiculously few compared to those of other conductors who, to be perfectly honest, were not half as worthy; but they,
it must be remembered, were not obliged to leave Europe at the apex of their careers, as happened to Jewish musicians opposed to the regime
in Austria and Germany, who were forced to flee from Nazism. This double CD set features some unforgettable Kleiber performances, from
Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony, a studio recording from 1935 with the Berliner Philharmoniker, to the 1955 recording of Tchaikovsky’s
“Pathétique”, one of the finest he ever made. All digitally re-mastered.
