COURSE SYLLABUS
Course Objectives
This first year program is well-balanced for beginning students of Italian. The
program is designed to develop and strengthen oral and written communication,
and reading and listening skills within a culturally rich environment that introduces
students to today’s Italians, their language, their concerns, and their lifestyles.
Major Assignments/Exams
Tests/Quizzes/Take-Home Tests 25%; Attendance, Class Participation and
Preparation (includes Student Activities Manual Assignments/ Practice Exercises
from Myitalianlab) 25%; Midterm 25%; Final 25%.

Extra Credit: Extra credit can be applied to specific activities but cannot be

Absences:
6 hour = 6 hours of unexcused absences
5 hour = 5 hours of unexcused absences
3 hour = 3 hours of unexcused absences
Excused absences are ONLY allowed in the case of participation in universitysponsored activities, observance of religious holidays, or a serious illness. Please
provide documentation and inform your professor as soon as possible about an
excused absences. All other absences are considered unexcused absences.

Required Examinations:
All quizzes and tests will be assigned in class based on the amount of work
completed. Tests are taken when we finish every chapter, we plan 4 Tests, 1
Midterm Exam and 1 Final Exam. Make-up tests will be given only if previously
discussed with the instructor. Homework is assigned at the end of each class.

COURSE SYLLABUS
Make-ups: If you know in advance that you will not be able to take an exam, you
must make arrangements with your instructor prior to the missed exam to take it. If
you have an unforeseen emergency on the day of the exam, you must contact the
instructor ASAP or BEFORE you miss the scheduled time for the exam to make
other arrangements. Make-ups will only be allowed if you contact the instructor
(by phone, e-mail, or in person) ahead of time, and provide documentation for the
emergency. Late work will not be accepted except in the case of a serious
emergency and with proper documentation to justify the lateness. If late work is
accepted, it will be with a penalty (decided by your instructor).
As a courtesy to the instructor and the students in the course cell phone use
including text messaging is not permitted in class. Thank you for your attention
to this matter.
