Head of Media Press Release Florence 21 June 2013 The Return of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino to Pitti Palace for the first time since 1984 With 14 offerings of operas, ballets and concerts 29 June to 27 July 2013 Pitti Palace, Courtyard of the Ammannati The sixteenth Courtyard of Palazzo Pitti is one of the most evocative places of Medici Florence. It takes its name from the architect Bartolomeo Ammannati (1511-1592) who was entrusted with the task of expanding the Pitti Palace and offers a stage of natural beauty. The patina and charm of time create an ideal atmosphere, capable of harmoniously merging art, music, dance, prose and architecture. Palazzo Pitti is a place dear to the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, which since its origins has made use of this space to transform views and panoramas into ideal stage settings. Spectacles have been attended by the Florentine in its many locales - Boboli Gardens, Neptune Nursery, Piazzale della Meridiana, Piazzale di Bacco, Vasca dei Cigni, Prato delle Colonne, the Amphitheatre, Sala Bianca, etc - from 1933 to 2009 in hundreds of shows. The most recent concerts were in 2009 but we must go back almost 30 years since an opera has been performed for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino at Palazzo Pitti, when Pier Luigi Pizzi staged Orfeo by Monteverdi/Berio in May 1984. A special thanks to Cristina Acidini, Superintendent of the Special Superintendence for the Historical, Artistic and Ethno-anthropological Heritage and for the Museums of the City of Florence and Mauro Linari, Director Department of Parks and Gardens of the Museums of Florence.
