DESTINATARI DELL’INIZIATIVA: MEDICI CHIRURGHI OCULISTI, ORTOTTISTI,
INFERMIERI IN OFTALMOLOGIA
ABSTRACT DEI CONTENUTI
Videocatarattarefrattiva 2015 quest’anno è contemporanea alla 35° Esposizione
Universale a Milano.
Per questa simbolica concomitanza la live surgery ha scelto centri chirurgici non
dell’Europa settentrionale: Bucarest, Il Cairo, Istanbul, Zagabria e Milano presentano
il meglio della tecnologia oftalmologica per la chirurgia del segmento anteriore,
dimostrando l’effettiva unificazione tecnologica. Collegare in breve tempo più centri
consente un impareggiabile concentrato di accostamenti con cui impostare e
affrontare la propria casistica chirurgica.
Numerose le sessioni cliniche e scientifiche in sede congressuale con rilevanti
speaker invitati da altri Paesi. La presentazione e discussione di casi complessi
riguardo alle strategie chirurgiche da adottare rimane un tema rilevante
nell’individualizzazione della chirurgia. Le lenti fachiche sono spesso l’unica
soluzione per le elevate ametropie, in particolare miopiche non hanno ancora lo
spazio che meriterebbero. I laser a femtosecondi sono l’asse portante della chirurgia
refrattiva, e si stanno espandendo anche nel campo della chirurgia di elezione
riparativa.
Mentre il campo delle lenti intraoculari monofocali sembra per ora
attraversare un momento di stasi, le lenti multifocali ricevono continua attenzione ed
innovazione da parte della ricerca.
Questi e altre letture e discussioni live fanno parte del congresso, con l’obiettivo di
mettere in luce quelli più rilevanti in relazione agli studi.
Fra la qualità della nutrizione, tema di Expo, e la salute della visione siamo
consapevoli esserci relazioni molto strette, così come tra l’arte e la vista. Non solo
con gli occhi vediamo, e in non poca parte con la mente interpretiamo,
necessariamente elaboriamo e creiamo la nostra visione. Abbiamo così dato vita ad
un’idea ispirata da una analoga iniziativa spagnola, che si tradurrà in una mostra di
pittura in sede congressuale. Sono attese in esposizione una trentina di opere di artisti
italiani che abbiamo voluto acquistare presso gli artisti stessi, con un premio in
denaro attribuito congiuntamente dal vostro voto e da quello di una giuria.
Videocatarattarefrattiva vi attende con la chirurgia e la più innovativa tecnologia, nel
più rappresentativo congresso annuale di cataratta e refrattiva in Italia.

From a total of almost 35.000 cataracts surgeries, more than 25.000 were made using an
artificial lens implant and the Phacoemulsification techniques, since 1997. In the last 5 or 6
years, more than 200 cataract surgery per month were made

SCIPIONE ROSSI
Scipione Rossi e' nato a Napoli il 13/3/1956.
Ha eseguito gli studi dell'obbligo e il liceo classico presso un liceo cattolico romano licenziandosi
con il massimo dei voti nel 1974.
Si e' iscritto alla facoltà di medicina e chirurgia dell'universita' degli studi di Roma " La Sapienza "
nell'anno accademico 1974-75. Durante gli studi universitari ha dimostrato notevole interesse per la
patologia medica, eseguendo 10 mesi di internato presso la IV cattedra di semeiotica medica ( dir.
Prof. Scavo) nell'anno accademico 1977-78. Nel 1978 e' entrato come studente interno presso la
seconda cattedra di clinica oculistica dell'Universita' di Roma diretta dal Prof. M.R. Pannarale,
eseguendo gli esami di clinica oculistica e ottica fisiopatologica con pieni voti. Ha preparato inoltre
la tesi di laurea in oculistica di indirizzo sperimentale " Frequenza critica di fusione in rapporto agli
stimoli accomodativi" che ha discusso a luglio 1980 riportando il massimo dei voti e lode. La tesi e'
stata pubblicata nel medesimo anno sugli "Annali di Oftalmologia e clinica Oculistica"
Si e' abilitato all'esercizio di medico-chirurgo presso la medesima università nel dicembre 1980 ed
iscritto all'Ordine dei Medici di Roma e provincia il 30.12.1980.
Ha vinto il concorso di ammissione per 8 posti della I scuola di specializzazione in Oftalmologia
dell'Universita' "La Sapienza" nel 1981 classificandosi secondo. Durante i 4 anni della scuola di
specializzazione si e' distinto per lo studio della malattie della retina, del vitreo e della coroide e
nelle tecniche di diagnostica e terapia quali la Fluorangiografia e la Laserterapia.
Nel 1982 ha vinto il concorso per un posto di tirocinio pratico ospedaliero post-laurea nella
Divisione Oculistica (Primario C.Santillo) bandito dall'ospedale generale di zona San Carlo di
Nancy frequentando per sei mesi il reparto e la sala operatoria riportando il giudizio finale di
ottimo. Anche dopo la fine del periodo semestrale ha continuato a frequentare l'ospedale vista la
patologia preminente trattata (vitreo-retina).
Dopo aver riportato il massimo dei voti in tutti gli esami della scuola di specializzazione, nel luglio
1984 ha conseguito il diploma di specializzazione in Oftalmologia con la votazione di 70/70 e lode
discutendo la tesi di carattere sperimentale "Disversione papillare. Inquadramento nosologico e
risultati ecografici".
Nel periodo seguente la specializzazione ha continuato a frequentare la Divisione Oculistica
dell'Ospedale San Carlo dove nel 1985 ha avuto l'incarico di consulente per organizzare la
diagnostica fluorangiografica e il servizio di fluorangiografia, incarico che ha mantenuto fino a
Giugno 1988.
Per migliorare le proprie capacita' nelle lingue straniere ha frequentato assiduamente i corsi di
lingua inglese presso l'International Language School di Roma ed ha superato l'esame del corso
Advanced.
Nel Giugno 1988 e' stato assunto come assistente oculista presso la divisione oculistica
dell'Ospedale San Carlo per 6 mesi fino al Dicembre dello stesso anno. In questo periodo, oltre la
normale attivita' chirurgica, si e' interessato dei problemi anestesiologici in oftalmochirurgia.
Interessato notevolmente dall'applicazione dell'informatica in campo sanitario, e in particolar modo
allo studio e alla realizzazione di interfaccie con strumenti di diagnostica oftalmologica ( ecografi
e fluorangiografi ), ha partecipato ad un corso di programmazione in linguaggio DB III e in
linguaggio C da febbraio ad aprile 1989.
A Luglio 1989 e' stato di nuovo assunto come assistente presso la Divisione Oculista dell'Ospedale
San Carlo di Nancy per 6 mesi.
A luglio 1990 e' stato nuovamente assunto presso la divisione oculistica dell'Ospedale San Carlo
con contratto semestrale, con strutturazione definitiva in pianta organica a gennaio 1991 con la
vincita del concorso per titoli ed esami bandito dallo stesso Ospedale per Assistente Oculista a
tempo definito, ruolo che a tutt'oggi ricopre come dirigente di I livello.
Ha prestato gratuitamente la sua opera di consulenza oculistica presso il reparto pediatrico della
cattedra di Ematologia dell'Universita' degli studi La Sapienza di Roma.
Ha eseguito frequenza all'estero nell'Agosto 1991 presso la Clinica Oculistica dell'Università di
Navarra in Pamplona per verificare e studiare l’organizzazione computerizzata di una clinica
oculistica.
Dal 1991 si è dedicato in modo preminente all’attivita’ chirurgica svolta presso l’ospedale San
Carlo la cui divivsione oculistica rappresenta un punto di referenza per la Chirurgia Vitreo-retinica
e l’Oftalmologia pediatrica.
Anche l’attivita’ scentifica prodotta tra il 1993 e il 1998 rispecchia l’impegno chirurgico eseguito in
questi anni: infatti i lavori prodotti in questo periodo riguardano soprattutto statistiche di risultati
chirurgici in bambini con lungo follow-up, complicanze della chirurgia vitreoretinica, valutazioni
post-operatorie per migliorare le tecniche.
Dal 1999 ad oggi l’indirizzo scientifico e’ stato completato dallo studio riguardante la chirurgia del
segmento anteriore ( cataratta e glaucoma ) e dai problemi connessi con la Chirurgia Refrattiva.
Nel luglio 2001, è stato nominato responsabile del reparto di day-surgery oculistica istituito presso
l’Ospedale San Carlo e contestualmente ha ottenuto il modulo relativo alla Chirurgia della
Cataratta e del Glaucoma, ruoli che a tutt’oggi ricopre.
Stephen G. Slade, MD, FACS
Stephen Glenn Slade is in private practice in Houston, Texas. He also serves as the co-medical
director of TLC, The Laser Center. He attended Tulane University and the University of Texas
Medical School with a final, elective year spent at Guy’s Hospital, London. He completed a
residency at the LSU Eye Center in New Orleans under Herbert Kaufman, MD and fellowships in
corneal surgery at Baylor in Houston and on Project ORBIS. Dr. Slade is a Fellow of the American
Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons. He is an active investigator
and teacher of surgical techniques including LASIK and lamellar refractive surgery. Dr. Slade's
experience with lamellar refractive surgery began in 1980 with epikeratoplasty, followed in 1984
performing myopic keratomileusis and LASIK in 1991. He is the US medical monitor for the B&L
Technolas Excimer Laser Custom Ablation clinical trials. He has received numerous awards
including named lectures, the China Service Medal, twice, and the 1997 Lans Lectureship. He is a
regular presenter at medical meetings and has produced many articles, book chapters and three
patents in the field. Dr. Slade has co-authored five textbooks on refractive surgery.
JOHANN KRUGER
Dr. Johann Krüger is a private ophthalmologist at a leading eye care centre in Cape Town, the
Tygervalley Eye & Laser Centre. As an honorary consultant at the University of Stellenbosch
Faculty of Health Sciences in the Department of Ophthalmology, with over 15,000 refractive
procedures and several thousand cataract procedures under his belt, Dr. Krüger is a dedicated
comprehensive cataract and refractive surgeon with extensive experience within his field.
After completing his MBChB at the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town, Dr. Krüger obtained
a MMed degree in Ophthalmology. He has also obtained a Masters in Family Medicine after
spending eight years in general medical practice. As a Fellow of both the South African College of
Medicine in Ophthalmology, and the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, Dr. Krüger is highly
respected in his field, with over 150 papers at international meetings. He has been published in a
number of peer review journals and has published several chapters in books dealing with eye
surgery procedures such as cataract and refractive surgery.
Dr. Krüger has a special interest in iLasik wavefront guided laser vision correction. He also
specializes in Keratoconus treatment, including cross linking, intra-corneal ring segment implants
and femtosecond-assisted corneal grafts. His vast experience in cataract surgery, multifocal lens
implants and contact lens implants has seen him participate in a large number of research projects
within the field. This in-depth experience and knowledge has helped him advise patients on the
latest developments in eye surgery procedures, for the best treatment options.

Antonio Scialdone é nato in Italia nel Settembre 1954.
Si è laureato in Medicina e Chirurgia nell’Aprile 1979, and ha superato l’Esame di Stato nello
stesso anno all’ Università di Firenze.
Nel Luglio 1983 si è specializzato in Oftalmologia all’Università di Firenze.
Dal Maggio 1983 al Gennaio 1984 ha ricevuto una borsa di studio presso la Clinica Oculistica di
Milano.
Dal Febbraio 1984 al Dicembre 2000 ha prestato opera come Oculista dipendente ospedaliero nel
Dipartimento di Oftalmologia dell’Istituto Scientifico San Raffaele – Università di Milano, dove era
Responsabile dell’Unità di Chirurgia del Segmento Anteriore.
Dal Novembre 1985 al Maggio 1986 è stato "Research Fellow” al Dipartimento di Oftalmologia
dell’Hammersmith Hospital a Londra (GB).
Dal 1990 al 2000 ha svolto le funzioni di professore a contratto di chirurgia del segmento anteriore
alla scuola di specializzazione in Oftalmologia dell’Università di Milano.
Dal 1998 al 2000 è stato nominato responsabile del controllo di qualità clinica per il Dipartimento
di Oftalmologia dell’Ospedale San Raffaele.
Dal Dicembre 2000 è Direttore Medico di Oculistica 1 presso l’Azienda Ospedaliera
Fatebenefratelli e Oftalmico di Milano.

Il Dr. Lucio Buratto ha conseguito la Laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia presso l’Università degli Studi
di Milano dove si è anche specializzato in Clinica Oculistica.

Ha pubblicato 67 trattati di chirurgia oculare di cui 26 dedicati alla chirurgia della cataratta, 5 a
quella del glaucoma e 11 a quella della miopia.
PRINCIPALI TAPPE PROFESSIONALI
Nel 1978 ha cominciato ad effettuare la facoemulsificazione secondo Kelman, la tecnica di
estrazione della cataratta che a tutt’oggi è la metodica più sofisticata di intervento.
Nel 1979 ha iniziato ad utilizzare le lenti intraoculari da camera posteriore.
Nel 1981 ha introdotto in Italia la “Viscochirurgia”, la moderna metodica operatoria che, mediante
l’uso di sostanze viscoelastiche, permette di semplificare e rendere più sicura la chirurgia della
cataratta e le altre tecniche chirurgiche oculari.
Nel 1982 ha presentato in Italia lo Yag Laser, lo strumento a luce fredda che permette di eseguire
alcuni interventi chirurgici all’interno dell’occhio senza necessità di utilizzare ferri chirurgici.
Nel 1983 ha organizzato il primo convegno internazionale di oftalmologia con trasmissione live via
satellite.
Nel 1986 ha introdotto in Italia la cheratomileusi senza congelamento, tecnica di correzione
chirurgica per difetti di miopia elevata ed alta ipermetropia (precorritrice dell’attuale Lasik).
Nel 1989 ha proposto ed utilizzato, primo assoluto a livello internazionale, il laser ad eccimeri
intrastromale per il trattamento della miopia elevata (tecnica ora chiamata LASIK). Nello stesso
periodo ha iniziato a trattare anche la miopia lieve con le tecniche di superficie (PRK).
Nel 1992 ha conseguito al congresso internazionale di San Diego (California) il premio per la
miglior nuova tecnica chirurgica (cheratomileusi miopica con laser ad eccimeri, precorritrice
dell’attuale LASIK).
Nel 1992 ha fondato a Milano, l’Istituto per l’insegnamento della chirurgia oculare.
Nel 1992 ha introdotto in Italia le nuove tecniche di chirurgia della cataratta senza sutura.
Nel 1993 è stato uno dei relatori del rapporto annuale della Società Oftalmologica Italiana “SOI”
dal titolo “Chirurgia Corneale”.
Nel 1995 è stato insignito del riconoscimento internazionale “KM Study Group” per le sue ricerche

USA su tale tecnica.

NIKICA GABRIC, MD

Prof. Nikica Gabric, MD PhD, was born in Metkovic in 1961. In 1984 he graduated from the
School of Medicine of University of Zagreb, in 1988 he acquired a scientific degree of Master of
Science, and two years later he became a specialist in ophthalmology. In 1997 he obtained the
scientific degree of Doctor of Science, in the same year he founded with his mentor, the late prof.
Kresimir Čupak, Svjetlost Eye Clinic. In 2010 Svjetlost Eye clinic became first Croatian University
Eye Hospital by the School of Medicine of University of Rijeka.
In 2011 prof. Gabric founded Svjetlost Eye clinic in Sarajevo and Banja Luka, expending his
activities in region. Except in Bosnia and Herzegovina, prof. Gabric acts as a consultant at Eye
Clinics in Meljine, Subotica, Zemun and Pristina.
Prof. Gabric has published over 400 scientific papers and articles in national and international
journals, as well as 4 books. Today he works as an ophthalmologist at Svjetlost Eye Clinic, where
he is also Head of the Clinic. His specialty is anterior eye segment surgery, he has performed more
than 30.000 surgical procedures, mainly cataracts, glaucoma, strabismus, corneal transplantations
and excimer laser surgery. He operated in 16 countries worldwide, in over 50 operating rooms, and
got a chance to operate on prestigious Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery State Institution in Moscow,
becoming the only surgeon in the region that achieved this. He is Professor at the School of
Medicine of University of Rijeka, and collaborative member of Croatian Academy of Medical
Sciences.
Throughout his professional career he worked as an innovator following international trends and
bringing new technologies and methodologies in our country. Thus, in 1995 he founded the first
Croatian Eye bank LHOB, and with his personal commitment he introduced a wide range of new
surgical procedures in Croatian medicine: ultrasonic cataract surgery, amniotic membrane
transplantation, sulcus fixation of intraocular lens, cataract surgery with intraocular lens
implantation in children, introduction of excimer laser refractive surgery, improvement of

His dedication to profession and science has been recognized repeatedly by the responsible
institutions so he received numerous awards, including the Order of Croatian Danica with
interlacing, the Ministry of Health award for outstanding contribution and achievements in the
entire work, the recognition of Southeast European Ophthalmological Society (SEEOS) for
extensive service in the field of ophthalmology and the prevention of blindness, Cicero prize for
best speaker among Croatian entrepreneurs. One of the last awards is the award for the Best
Manager in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which he received in 2011 for scientific and business
development, world-wide reputation, technological and professional development, as well as the
superior ophthalmic practice expanding in Southeast Europe.
MAJA BOHAC
ZAGABRIA, CROAZIA
Maja Bohac, MD, was born in Slavonski Brod, Croatia in 1981. She graduated from the School of
Medicine of University of Zagreb in 2006 and received a Dean’s award for best student in her
generation. Four years later, in 2011, she became a specialist in ophthalmology. She is currently
working on her doctoral dissertation on the topic of refractive surgery.
Dr Bohac works at Svjetlost Eye Clinic in Zagreb, where she holds a position of the Head of the
Refractive surgery Department. She is also managing 14 residents of ophthalmology currently
doing their residency for Svjetlost Eye Clinic. She is also collaborating with Svjetlost subsidiaries
in Split, Croatia, as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where she performs refractive laser
surgeries. She has instructed lasik surgery to many ophthalmologists in several clinics in Bosnia and
Herzegovina and Serbia.
Her specialty is anterior eye segment with a special interest in refractive laser surgery. Although
quite young, she is the most experienced refractive laser surgeon not only in Croatia, but in the
region as well. She has performed more than 8.000 laser surgical procedures. She attended several
trainings abroad for LASIK surgery in Germany and Spain, as well as training for phakic lens
refractive surgery in Italy.
IVA DEKARIS
ZAGABRIA, CROAZIA
Iva Dekaris, Associate professor of the University of Rijeka-School of Medicine (2009), is a
Medical Director of Svjetlost Eye Clinic in Zagreb, Immediate Past President of the European Eye
Bank Association (EEBA; 2010-2013), and Associate-member of the Department of Medical
Sciences of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
After recommendation of the Croatian Academy of Science and Arts she received "Joyce and
Zlatko Baloković" grant for a one-year scholarship (1997-98) at Harvard Medical School, where
she finished Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at The Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston;
and defended her PhD thesis „The role of cytokines in corneal graft rejection“ at School of
Medicine in Zagreb in 1999. In year 2000 she received the highest Croatian reward for young
scientists – Croatian state award for the achievement in science.
She published 42 papers in CC journals, co-authored first book on Eye banking in Croatia, wrote 22
chapters in books and over 250 abstracts at conferences (published citations 276: Scopus Index).
She is a lecturer at postgraduate School at Universities of Rijeka and Zagreb-School of Medicine
and a reviewer for IOVS, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Acta Ophthalmologica, Eye,
Molecular Vision, Collegium Antropologicum, OMICS Publishing Group and BioMed Central.
She is a primary investigator of a scientific project supported by the Croatian Ministry of Science
named: ”Immunology of the eye”, in a collaboration with Institute “Ruđer Bošković” in Zagreb.
She is a member of the Editorial board for Journal of Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology
(SAD), Acta Medica Croatica and RAD HAZU- the Department of Medical Sciences.
The areas of her expertise are corneal transplantation, cataract and refractive surgery. She was the
first surgeon to start with lamellar keratoplasty in Croatia in year 2010, and has the overall
experience of over 15.000 surgeries mostly cataracts, corneal transplantation and refractive surgery
on the lens. She speaks English, French, German and Italian.
RATIMIR LAZIC
ZAGABRIA, CROAZIA
Ratimir Lazic, MD PhD, was born in Zagreb, Croatia. In 1998. he graduated from the
School of Medicine, University of Zagreb. In 2005. he became a specialist in ophthalmology, under
the mentorship of Nikica Gabric, MD PhD. In 2008. he obtained Masters Degree on School of
Science, University of Zageb. In 2010. he obtained PhD degree Doctor of School of Medicine,
Univeristy of Zagreb, and in the next year Scientific Assistant Degree.
As young ophthalmology resident he was a junior researcher on scientific project "Corneal
Transplantation – Eye Bank" in Zagreb in 2001. Since 2004. he is a head of Retina Department in
University Eye Clinic "Svjetlost" in Zagreb, specialized in the diagnostic and treatment of the
posterior eye segment diseases.
Following the development of Eye Clinic "Svjetlost" and its foundations he is permanent consultant
and surgeon not only in Zagreb, Sarajevo, Banja Luka and Split, but also in Meljine, Subotica,
Zemun and Pristina.
Among numerous scientific papers and articles he is most recognizable for those published in
Ophthalmology Journal and Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology.
His constant improvement in medical and surgical treatment of the posterior eye segment diseases
results in implementation of new surgical techniques and new therapeutic methods. He is
experienced in minimally invasive vitrectomy in treating retinal detachment with silicone oil and
gas tamponade, as well as in diabetic retinopathy. He performed number of macular surgeries such
as macular pucker, macular hole and vitreomacular traction syndrome, but also vitrectomies for
intraocular foreign body and endophtalmitis.
He introduced new therapeutic methods; photodynamic therapy in age related macular
degeneration (2004.); intravitreal injections: Triamcinolon in 2004., bevacizumab (Avastin) in
2005., ranibizumab (Lucentis) in 2007., dexamethasone intravitreal implants (Ozurdex) 2011.,
aflibercept (Eylea) 2013.
Not the less important, he introduced new diagnostic methods in Croatia: Digital Fluoresceine
Angiography in 2003. and Optical Coherent Tomography in 2005. for better diagnostic and
treatment of the macular diseases.
He is experienced in organising committees for domestic and international meetings. As a head of
tretina department he is constantly working with young residents sharing theoretical knowledge
and practical skills in ophthalmology, especially in the field of retina.
He is an active member of The American Society of Retina Specialists.

Nella sua pratica ha eseguito più di 40.000 interventi ; ha ricevuto numerosi
riconoscimenti a livello internazionale.
Ha proposto ed utilizzato, primo assoluto a livello mondiale, il laser ad
eccimeri all’interno della cornea per il trattamento della miopia elevata (tecnica
ora chiamata LASIK). Successivamente ha iniziato a trattare anche la miopia

Nel 2011 è stato il primo chirurgo dell’ovest Europa ad utilizzare il
Femtosecond Laser per la chirurgia della cataratta.
E’ un innovatore in molti campi dell’oftalmologia: chirurgico, strumentale,
didattico, congressuale ed editoriale .
Ha pubblicato 67 trattati di chirurgia oculare, di cui 26 dedicati alla chirurgia
della
cataratta , 5 a quella del glaucoma e 11 a quella della miopia.
Ha ideato e fatto costruire 148 ferri per chirurgia oculare.
Da dicembre 1997 a dicembre 2005 è stato Presidente dell’AICCER (
Associazione Italiana di Chirurgia della Cataratta e della Refrattiva).
E’ stato Presidente Onorario dell’ AISO (Accademia Italiana Scienze
Oftalmologiche).

 Luogo e data di nascita: Caltanissetta, 21 febbraio 1953
 Laureato in Medicina e Chirurgia presso l’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore nel 1976.
Specializzato in Oftalmologia presso l’Università di Bari nel 1980. Dal 1978 al 1983 è stato
assistente incaricato e successivamente ricercatore confermato fino ad aprile 1997 presso
l’Università di Roma la Sapienza, Istituto di Oftalmologia. Ha rivestito la qualifica assistenziale
di aiuto dal 1983 fino alla cessazione per dimissioni dal servizio.
 Ha svolto mansioni di caporeparto o caposervizio ininterrottamente dal 1983 in poi, fondando tra
l’altro la struttura del day hospital della II Clinica Oculistica.
Durante i circa venti anni di attività nell’Università di Roma La Sapienza, ha svolto le funzioni
di Docente di malattie dell’apparato visivo negli anni accademici 95/96 e 96/97, mentre da più
anni era già Docente nella Scuola di Specializzazione in Oftalmologia 1.
Dall’aprile 1998 svolge le funzioni di Responsabile dell’Unità Operativa di Oculistica presso la
Casa di Cura convenzionata “Nuova Itor” di Roma, dove ha completamente ristrutturato e
riorganizzato il servizio e le attività assistenziali.
Nel 2001 il reparto da lui diretto ha eseguito più di 1000 interventi chirurgici.
Personalmente ha eseguito più di 6000 interventi.

CARONES FRANCESCO
Il Dott.Francesco Carones è il referente per la chirurgia del Centro. Forte anche di una solida cultura
scientifica e di ricerca, si occupa esclusivamente di chirurgia refrattiva e chirurgia della cataratta. Il
Dott. Carones nel 1988 si è laureato in Medicina e Chirurgia presso l'Università Statale di Milano
con il punteggio di 110/110 e lode. Specializzatosi in Oftalmologia nel 1992 presso la stessa
Università con il punteggio di 70/70 e lode, ha focalizzato da subito i suoi interessi professionali
sulla chirurgia refrattiva e della cataratta. Nel 1992 ha effettuato un training presso l'Università di
Emory (Atlanta, USA) per acquisire ulteriori conoscenze nel campo della chirurgia refrattiva.
Il Dott. Carones è estremamente attivo nella produzione scientifica, partecipando di frequente in
qualità di relatore ai più importanti congressi di aggiornamento scientifico. Nella sua produzione vi
sono numerosi articoli apparsi sulle principali riviste specialistiche internazionali del settore, ed è
stato autore o coautore di 6 testi sulla chirurgia refrattiva. Attualmente è uno dei Direttori della
International Society of Refractive Surgery, una delle maggiori organizzazioni mondiali per lo
studio della chirurgia refrattiva, di cui è anche il rappresentante nazionale. Egli è inoltre membro di
prestigiose società scientifiche italiane e straniere, tra cui la Società Oftalmologica Italiana, la

ASENA BILGEHAN SEZGIN
Dr. Bilgehan Sezgin graduated from the Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1998 and worked at
the Dokuz Eylul University department of physiology as a research assistant from 1999 to 2000. Dr.
Sezgin then worked at the Ophthalmology Clinic at the Izmir Teaching Hospital until 2004, after
which time she began working at Kaskaloglu Eye Hospital. Her surgical specialty is refractive and
cataract surgery. Dr. Sezgin speaks English. She lives with her husband, Dr. Erden Asena, and
family in Izmir.

Hello I am Mehmet Söyler and was born in 1967 in Diyarbakir. I completed elementary, middle and
high school education in Batman. I worked as a doctor in Gülhane Military Medical Academy
(GATA) between 1985 and 1991 and in various military institutions in Turkey between 1991 and
1994. I completed my specialization on eye diseases in Gülhane Military Medical Academy
(GATA) between 1994 and 1997. I served as an expert in the eye clinic and as a chief of the eye
clinic between 2005 and 2009 in Güzelyalı Air Force Hospital with the capacity of 600 beds. I
successfully completed my mission in military institution with the rank of Colonel and retired in
2009. I founded Private Batıgöz Hospital with the aim to operate in the health sector and to serve
for people in 2004; Hatay Batıgöz Center in 2005; Şirinyer Batıgöz Center in 2006; Diyarbakır
Batıgöz Center in 2007; Batıgöz Romania in 2010 and Batıgöz Iraq in 2011 as overseas branches;
and Karun Medical in 2008 and Mf Medical in 2009 with the aim to operate in the Medical sector
and I continue to act as the chairman of the board. I am married and have two children. I have a
good command of English. I have participated in many scientific meetings as Spokesman and in
Live Surgery organizations in Turkey since 1998 to the present day. I have performed Live

ASLAN BEKIR SITKI
Head of Eye Department at Liv Hospital, in Ankara.
He has an extensive experience in Advanced Cataract and Glaucoma Surgery. His main interest is
advanced technology IOLs and phacofluidics.
He completed a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at Cambridge University, Addenbrokes’
Hospital, UK.
He has been teaching microsurgery for more than 30 years. He has participated in live surgeries and
gave lectures locally and internationally. He has published papers and four chapters in books related
to cataract and cataract surgery. He recently published a paper describing a new Phaco Technic
“Crater and Split” in the September 2012 issue of JCRS.
He’s the Ex-President of Turkish Cataract and Refractive Surgery Society. He contributed to the
establishment and progress of modern eye-banking in Turkey. He is a member of ESCRS
Publication Committee and Editor of Eurotimes Turkey and the faculty member of ESASO, hosted
