ELECTRIC BUSES IN HISTORICAL CENTER
• Historical center pubblic transportation solution has been identified by Atac
in year 1995 by 40-50 electric minibus Gulliver (one of the biggest fleet in
Europe), manufactured by Tecnobus S.p.A.
• Since 1996 historical center pubblic transportation has been improuved by 4
full electric lines (116, 117, 119 and 125); the 5,1 m. Gulliver cars can cross
the narrow center streets with high passengers and local inhabitants
satisfaction
• Daily production of each car was around 60 -80 km with 7-8 hours of
batteries recharging
• Fleet overhaul and technical support by Tecnobus since the beginning by a
full service contract

• Since year 2005 drivers and passengers starts to strongly ask to Atac to have
air conditioned cars; for this reason and due to high age reached (around 10
years service), Atac starts to imagine a new electric vehicle generation.
• Atac was asked in 2007 from Rome Municipality to study how to improuve
quantity and quality of historical center pubblic transportation and the choice
was a new full electric generation lines (up to 7 lines)
• In year 2008 a new contract was fixed between Tecnobus and Atac based on
100 vehicles delivery and 5 years full service.
• The old Gulliver generation substitution has been completed (50 deliveries at
april 2010) and is now ongoing the improuving of the electric fleet with 3
new electric lines (completion within beginning of year 2011).

Failure analysis
•
Many drivers calls for failures are to be solved by telephone (incomplete training of
new product on 6.500 drivers)
•
The most of “real” failures is connected with doors (many people try to force) and
batteries + engine control software (sometimes quick reset necessary)
•
Other buses common failures (pneumatic, mechanics, springs, gear boxes, incoming
water, etc.) are not present.
•
All failures are normally solved during batteries recharging time (except damages
on external body) and Tecnobus people is well organized on a three shifts base with
original spare parts available

Conclusions
The new Gulliver generation is judged from Rome users a real good product for
heavvy public transportation in the historical center. Atac and customers are very
satisfied mainly because of :
- high level of confort (width, air conditioning, engine, informations, ticketing,
electric platform)
- improuved daily battery life (12 hours or 130 km with air conditioning)
- indipendent driver cabin (driver door)
- improuved maintenability
- low recurring costs
- high quality of Tecnobus personnel from technical and management point of view
