Abstract:
In 2003 Robin Chapman stated several conjectures concerning determinants of Legendre symbol
matrices. For some cases the conjectural answer was very easy, while for other cases it involved
arithmetic invariants of quadratic fields like the fundamental unit and the class number. After several
years of attempts to prove these conjectures, Chapman called them ``an evil determinant problem''.
In my talk I shall discuss recent proofs of Chapman's conjectures as well as further generalizations.
The knowledge of basic linear algebra is enough. At the end of my talk I'll show how these results
are related to the more than 60 years old Ankeny-Artin-Chowla conjecture.
