USED TO
Si usa per parlare di :
 Abitudini riferite al passato;
- Esempio: I used to live in the countryside, when I was a boy. ( Vivevo in
campagna quand’ero ragazzo.).
 Situazioni che al momento presente sono cambiate.
- Esempio: I didn’t use to eat peas, but now I love them. (Non mangiavo
piselli, ora mi piacciono molto.).
Come si nota ngli esempi, la struttura used to corrisponde all’imperfetto italiano.
 Le forme negative e interrogative di used to e le risposte brevi si costruiscono
con did/didn’t.
- Esempio: I did not (didn’t) use to smoke. ( Non fumavo).
- Esempio: “Did you use to go to the mountains, when you were a child?” “
Yes , I did.” ( “Andavi in montagna da bambino?” “ Si”).
 A volte used to è sostituito dal costrutto would + forma base del verbo.
- Esempio: When we were children we used to/would eat a lot of chocolate. (
Quando eravamo ragazzi mangiavamo molta cioccolata.).
