RovelloDue – Piccolo Spazio Politecnico
is the result of a encounter between the Piccolo
Teatro di Milano - Teatro d’Europa and the
Politecnico di Milano, two organisations bound
by a profound common vision and a long history
of collaboration.

nasce dall’incontro tra Piccolo Teatro
di Milano-Teatro d’Europa e Politecnico
di Milano, legati da una profonda sintonia
e da una lunga collaborazione.
The first room, which opens onto the street,
welcomes the visitor or passer-by with a more
traditional narration via words, images and video.
Information on the building is followed by a
presentation of the prominent moments in the
stories of the Theatre and the Politecnico, the
two souls of the project: from the foundation, to
the people who created the history of the two
institutions, right up to the great productions and
patents, the two stories run parallel. In 2002, with
the staging of Infinities at the Bovisa, written by
the English mathematician John D. Barrow and
directed by Luca Ronconi, the Piccolo and the
Politecnico came together to begin a shared
journey of infinite research.
Passing through a “theatrical” curtain, visitors are
plunged into a second environment, created to
occasionally hold differing temporary installations
with a strong multimedia and, above all,
emotional impact.
Il primo ambiente, affacciato su strada, accoglie
il visitatore, o passante, con una narrazione più
tradizionale per testi, immagini e video. Dopo
alcune notizie sull’edificio, si ripercorrono i
momenti salienti dell’avventura del Teatro e
dell’Ateneo, le due anime del progetto: dalla
fondazione, passando per le personalità che
hanno scritto la storia delle due Istituzioni, sino ai
grandi spettacoli e ai brevetti, le due storie
corrono parallele. Nel 2002, con la messa in
scena dello spettacolo Infinities alla Bovisa, testo
del matematico inglese John D. Barrow e regia di
Luca Ronconi, Piccolo e Politecnico si
incontrano per iniziare un comune percorso di
ricerca infinita.
Oltrepassando una tenda “teatrale”, il visitatore
si cala in un secondo ambiente: una realtà
coinvolgente, destinata a ospitare di volta in
volta differenti installazioni temporanee dal forte
impatto multimediale ma soprattutto emotivo.

the involvement of two historical Milanese
institutions in the creation of a common project
aimed at telling the stories of those protagonists
of artistic and scientific culture who, over time
and through fertile collaboration, created the
particular character of the city of Milan, both in
terms of its national identity and its undeniable
openness to the world.

impegnate due storiche Istituzioni della città
nella realizzazione di un progetto comune con
l’obiettivo di raccontare le storie di quei
protagonisti della cultura artistica e della cultura
scientifica che nel tempo, con un proficuo
intreccio, hanno costruito il carattere specifico
della città di Milano, sia nella definizione
dell’identità nazionale, sia nella sua indiscussa
apertura internazionale.
RovelloDue aims for a new kind of accessibility
and experimentation. Accessibility, in the sense
of a new openness provided by the theatrical
institution, offering residents a completely new
entrance to the Chiostro Nina Vinchi, providing
them with a brief interactive and immersive
experience. The theatre thus increases its
permeability and accessibility and, together with
the Politecnico, offers an opportunity to freely
and playfully experience relevant and often littleknown content. The two institutions open their
respective archives and display the material
through spectacular interactive narration. A
source of intangible memory and knowledge.

RovelloDue punta ad una nuova accessibilità e
sperimentazione. Accessibilità, nel senso di
nuova apertura dell’Istituzione teatrale, che offre
ai cittadini un inedito ingresso al Chiostro Nina
Vinchi, donando loro una breve esperienza
interattiva e immersiva. Aumenta così la sua
permeabilità e accoglienza e, insieme all’Ateneo,
offre la possibilità di entrare in comunicazione,
liberamente e in maniera ludica, con contenuti
rilevanti e tal volta poco conosciuti. Le due
Istituzioni aprono i rispettivi archivi e ne mettono
in circolazione i materiali, attraverso spettacolari
narrazioni interattive. Un serbatoio di memorie
e conoscenze intangibili.

An immersive experience
Un’esperienza immersiva
Politecnico, Milan. Over 150 years of history. Tens of thousands of works and projects
both created and still to be invented. A complexity and variety of thought which is hard to
express if not through the concept of a journey. The idea was given to us by Laura Curino in
the show Miracoli a Milano, in which each miracle is staged as a delicate and indispensable
act of transmission of consciousness with the journey as a metaphor,
the common thread and link.
Politecnico, Milano. Oltre 150 anni di storia. Decine di migliaia di opere e progetti realizzati
e ancora da inventare. Una complessità e varietà di pensiero, difficile da raccontare
se non tramite l’espediente del viaggio. A suggerircelo, Laura Curino nello spettacolo
Miracoli a Milano in cui ogni miracolo viene messo in scena come un delicato
ed indispensabile atto di trasmissione della conoscenza mentre il viaggio ne rimane
la metafora, il filo conduttore e collegamento.
Now, in the same way, this interactive installation sends us on a voyage of discovery.
The voyage becomes the selected category of works created as well as current
polytechnic research.
Ora, allo stesso modo, l’installazione interattiva ci proietta in un tragitto di scoperta.
Il viaggio diviene la categoria di selezione delle opere realizzate e ricerche politecniche
in atto.
A miracle, we say, every time we are wonderstruck. With a feeling of marvel, we begin as
the pioneers did, we move among stories and we immerse ourselves in history. Full of
meaning, the shimmering walls vibrate and multiply. Kaleidoscopic effects make reference
to the etymological union of the words “see” and” beautiful” as well as to the rhetorical
figure of entrelacement, in a continuous interweaving of stories and outcomes.
They are generated through a number of visual motives created by Lucio Diana for the sets
of Miracoli a Milano, they are reiterated in tiny geometric forms, taking over the space,
transforming it and rendering it “sensitive” with their infinite variations. The visitor is
therefore given the possibility of interacting with the installation, activating the multitude
of content through their actions.
Un miracolo, si dice ogni volta che lo stupore travolge. Con sentimento di meraviglia,
partiamo come hanno fatto i pionieri, ci muoviamo tra i racconti e ci immergiamo nella
storia. Le pareti, intrise di significato, cangianti vibrano e si moltiplicano. Effetti
caleidoscopici rimandano all’unione etimologica delle parole “vedere” e “bello” oltreché
alla figura retorica dell’entrelacement, in un continuo intreccio di storie ed esiti.
Si generano da alcuni motivi visivi creati da Lucio Diana per le scenografie di Miracoli
a Milano, si reiterano in minuscole forme geometriche, prendono possesso dell’ambiente,
con le loro infinite declinazioni, mutano e lo rendono “sensibile”. Al visitatore viene così
lasciata la possibilità di interagire con l’allestimento e di svelarne, mediante le sue azioni,
la molteplicità dei contenuti.
All one has to do is take the “right” notebook, having been attracted by the title or intrigued
by the cover, open it and place it on the nearby lectern. By doing so, never-before seen
multimedia content is activated. The narration begins. Films and images come to life
on the vertical surface. Changing the notebook changes the projection.
A few seconds of viewing and on to the choice of a different theme.
È sufficiente prendere il taccuino “giusto”, facendosi catturare dal titolo o incuriosire dalla
copertina, aprirlo e posizionarlo sul vicino leggio. Così facendo, di fronte a sé, si avvia
un inedito contributo multimediale. Comincia la narrazione. Filmati e immagini si animano
sulla superficie verticale. Cambia il taccuino, cambia la proiezione. Pochi secondi di visione
e poi nuovamente la scelta di un tema differente.
Photographs, often period shots, sketches, fragments of shows and original video
accompany us on a journey of knowledge, or a mixture of knowledge, discovery of
unexpected results, or research, in a stream of experiments and trials. A journey which for
certain aspects runs backwards through the life of the Politecnico and of Milan, while for
others is projected into the future, through potential scenarios of scientific experimentation
and social innovation. A real and physical journey, thanks to the means of transport and the
infrastructures created by figures tied to the Politecnico. A human journey, a journey
of passion, trials and experiments carried out by professors and students.
Fotografie, talvolta d’epoca, schizzi, frammenti di spettacoli e video originali
ci accompagnano in un viaggio di conoscenza, o commistione di conoscenze, scoperta,
esiti imprevedibili, e ricerca, in un susseguirsi di esperimenti e sforzi.
Un viaggio per certi versi a ritroso, nella vita del Politecnico e di Milano, per altri proiettato
verso il futuro, tra scenari potenziali di sperimentazione scientifica e innovazione sociale.
Un viaggio reale e fisico, grazie ai mezzi di trasporto ed infrastrutture ideate da protagonisti
legati all’Ateneo. Un viaggio umano, di passioni, tentativi e sperimentazioni da parte
di professori e studenti.
Past visions of the future connect the visible with the invisible, events and people who are
separated by both space and time. On the contrary, present visions of the future seek
to translate the invisible into the visible, creating innovation and hoping for improvement
in the near future. The precariousness of Francesco Brioschi’s journeys by carriage, the
charm of the Lambretta, the marvellously shapely Isetta, the Roman names chosen by
Lancia, the flying cars of the future, probable cars in kit form and possible vehicles made
out of fabric - this is just a selection of the content on offer.
Visioni future nel passato mettono in comunicazione il visibile con l’invisibile, eventi
e persone lontane nello spazio e nel tempo. Visioni future nel presente cercano al contrario
di tradurre l’invisibile nel visibile, creando innovazione e auspicando il miglioramento
in un momento prossimo. La precarietà degli spostamenti in diligenza di Francesco
Brioschi, il fascino della Lambretta, lo stupore per le forme di Isetta, i nomi romani
di Lancia, le future auto-volanti, probabili veicoli fai da te e possibili carrozzerie in tessuto,
sono solo alcuni dei contenuti offerti.
