The International Research Area on Moral
Theology (AIRTM) is made up of a group of
scholars who have been working for several
years on an international level around some
hypotheses concerning the renewal of moral
theology in the light of the encyclical Veritatis
splendor. So far it has organized seven
Colloquia and two international Congresses,
the proceedings of which have been published.

L’Area di Ricerca (AIRTM) è un gruppo di studiosi che da alcuni anni lavorano a livello internazionale attorno ad alcune ipotesi complessive sul rinnovamento della teologia morale
nella luce dell’enciclica Veritatis splendor. Ha
finora organizzato sette Colloqui e due
Congressi internazionali, di cui sono stati pubblicati gli atti.

The Research Area carries out its work in
three fundamental ways: 1) the preparation of
seminars and conferences that bring together
experts in the field; 2) the promotion of
research and doctoral dissertations; 3) the
elaboration of written materials proposing
working hypotheses and lines of common
reflection. It was officially instituted in
February 1997 at the Pontifical John Paul II
Institute for Studies on Marriage and the
Family and is directed by Prof. Livio Melina

Le modalità di lavoro sono la preparazione di
Seminari e Colloqui tra esperti, la promozione
di ricerche e tesi dottorali, l’elaborazione di
testi all’interno di ipotesi e piste comuni di riflessione. Istituita ufficialmente nel febbraio
1997 presso il Pontificio Istituto Giovanni
Paolo II per Studi su Matrimonio e Famiglia, è
diretta dal Prof. Livio Melina.
Dal 2006, l’Area Internazionale di Ricerca
sulla Teologia Morale (AIRTM) fa parte
dell’Area di Ricerca in Antropologia ed Etica
Familiare (ARAEF), le cui iniziative sono realizzate in collaborazione con il Servizio
Nazionale della CEI per il Progetto Culturale.

IL PROGRAMMA
Il Colloquio tenta di esplorare la fecondità dell’amore come
fondamento della morale. In questo modo si propone di
indicare linee per il superamento sia del razionalismo (che
esclude l’amore dalla dinamica morale) che dell’emotivismo
(che preclude l’amore ad ogni comprensione razionale). La
proposta del Colloquio intende così approfondire le radici
dell’esperienza cristiana, alla luce dell’Evento nel quale il
logos si manifesta come agape, diventando principio di un
agire nuovo.

The Colloquium intends to explore the fruitfulness of love as
the foundation of morality. In this way, general directions
are proposed to overcome rationalism (which excludes love
from the moral dynamism) and emotivism (which precludes
love from any rational comprehension). The proposal
intends to explore the roots of Christian experience in the
light of the event in which the Logos is manifested, thus
becoming the principle of a new way of acting.

The Reasonableness of an Event that Awakens Love
“All’inizio dell’essere cristiano non c’è una decisione etica o
una grande idea, bensì l’incontro con un avvenimento, con
una persona, che dà alla vita un nuovo orizzonte e con ciò
la direzione decisiva (...) Siccome Dio ci ha amati per
primo, l’amore adesso non è più solo un comandamento,
ma è la risposta al dono dell’amore col quale Dio ci viene
incontro” (DCE 1).
“Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a
lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which
gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction. Saint
John's Gospel describes that event in these words: “God so
loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever
believes in him should ... have eternal life” (3:16). (...) Since
God has first loved us (cf. 1 Jn 4:10), love is now no longer
a mere “command”; it is the response to the gift of
love with which God draws near to us”
(Deus caritas est, n.1).
