Olympic card with the celebrations for the one hundred and fiftieth
anniversary of the Unity of Italy and does it by becoming the epicentre and
driving force of the entire regional and national area. This time the factories
are those of imaginings: for the whole year royal residences, castles, ex
factories, fortresses, historic gardens, lake and alpine landscapes, mines,
spinning mills and abbeys of our region become, more than ever, the unique
stages of an exceptional plot of exhibition and live performance events,
fulcrum and opportunity to deepen the knowledge of places charged with
beauty and historical memory. Not absent from the roll-call are the 100
festivals of music, theatre, cinema, dance, street arts and contemporary
arts of Piemonte dal Vivo which, for the occasion, dedicate part of their
creativity and work to the commemoration of the Resurgence and its
heroes, in addition to the many resurgences of contemporary Italy.

Your father parked the Giardinetta Fiat in the courtyard, under a tree that
seemed little more than a stem, and without drawing breath started to
report the latest news on Italia ’61, the international exhibition organised in
Torino to celebrate the first centenary of the Unity of Italy, on everybody’s
lips for many months. You would have wanted to know about the Circarama
Disney and the 360° screen they had told you about at school, but you
didn’t want to talk first, so you propped yourself against your bicycle and
let him continue the story, filling your wild childish imagination with the
180 horses of the Cinzano double-decker buses and with the Cavoretto
cable car, the magnificent fair ground, the fireworks events on the Po, the
Exhibition Area or the 30 metres of progress of the Monorail. It was 1961.
Thinking about it again now it is a question of a moment, and everything
comes to life as with an old postcard of noses in the air fascinated by the
magnificence of that piece of America in our home, so much so that you
felt you were wearing the cut-work knee socks that were the legacy of
those years.
In 2011 city and nation are once again centre stage. Torino which at that
time was trying to escape the crepuscular destiny of ex political capital,
to become a metropolis of industrial production, today plays the post-

Tuo padre parcheggiò la Giardinetta Fiat in cortile, sotto un albero che pareva ancor poco più di uno stelo, e
tutto d’un fiato cominciò a riportare le ultime notizie
su Italia ’61, l’esposizione internazionale organizzata
per celebrare a Torino il primo centenario dell'Unità
d'Italia, da molti mesi sulla bocca di tutti. Avresti voluto sapere del Circarama Disney e dello schermo a
360° di cui ti avevano detto a scuola, ma non volevi
parlare per prima, così ti appoggiasti alla tua bicicletta e lasciasti che fosse lui a proseguire il racconto,
nutrendo la tua fervida immaginazione di bimba con
i 180 cavalli degli autobus a due piani della Cinzano,
piuttosto che con l’ovovia di Cavoretto, il grandioso
luna-park, le gare pirotecniche sul Po, il Comprenso-
rio Espositivo o i 30 metri di progresso della Monorotaia. Era il 1961. A ripensarci adesso è questione di
un attimo, e tutto prende vita come da una vecchia
cartolina di nasi in su affascinati dalle magnificenze
di quel pezzo d’America a casa nostra, tanto che ti
senti ancora addosso i calzettoni traforati retaggio
di quegli anni.
Nel 2011 città e nazione sono di nuovo in scena. La
Torino che allora cercava di sfuggire al destino crepuscolare di ex capitale politica, per diventare una metropoli della produzione industriale, oggi gioca la
carta postolimpica con le celebrazioni per il centocinquantenario dall’Unità d’Italia, e lo fa diventando
epicentro e volano di tutto il territorio regionale e
nazionale. Le fabbriche, questa volta, sono quelle
della fantasticheria: per tutto l’anno residenze reali,
castelli, ex opifici, fortezze, giardini storici, paesaggi
lacustri e alpini, miniere, filatoi e abbazie del nostro
territorio diventano, più che mai, i singolari palcoscenici di una trama di eventi espositivi e di spettacolo
dal vivo d’eccezione, fulcro e insieme pretesto per
approfondire la conoscenza di luoghi carichi di suggestione per bellezza e memoria storica. Non mancano infatti all’appello i 100 festival di musica, teatro,
cinema, danza, arti in strada e circo contemporaneo
di Piemonte dal Vivo che, per l’occasione, dedicano
parte della loro creatività e del loro lavoro alla commemorazione del Risorgimento e dei suoi eroi, nonché ai molti risorgimenti dell’Italia contemporanea.
Le vie sonore dell’Italia medievale sacra e profana, le musiche delle fastose corti signorili
ed ecclesiastiche rinascimentali, o la sontuosità espressiva del
Seicento europeo, sono solo
alcune delle tradizioni musicali
riproposte da storici festival del
Piemonte. Le trasformazioni
intervenute nello stile e nella
tecnica, nelle concezioni teoriche, nella pratica sociale e nelle
modalità di fruizione della musica fra la metà del XV secolo e
i primi decenni del XVII trovano
così intonazioni musicali aderenti allo spirito dell’epoca in
cui furono scritte, privilegiando
ove possibile l’utilizzo di strumenti originali. Le fonti manoscritte, le xilografie, le tabulae
compositoriae e la copiosa letteratura fiorita con l’avvento
della stampa sono oggetto di
studi musicologici e storici, e
vengono affidate a interpreti
tra i più accreditati a livello internazionale che ne rievocano
con grande eclettismo le atmosfere di antica grazia, accompagnando il pubblico verso suggestivi contesti emotivi e sonori.

The sounds of sacred and profane medieval Italy, the
music of the magnificent and elegant Renaissance
and ecclesiastic courts, or the expressive
sumptuousness of the European seventeenth
century, are just some of the musical traditions
presented once again by the historic festivals of
Piemonte. The transformations that took place in
style and technique, in theoretical concepts, in
social practice and in the methods of musical
enjoyment between the middle of the XV century
and the early decades of the XVII century thus find
musical intonations belonging to the spirit of the
time in which they were written, favouring where
possible the use of original instruments. The
handwritten sources, xylographs, the tabulae
compositoriae and the copious literature produced
with the advent of printing are the object of

convivial at the time of Charles the Great; instrumental refinement and vocal
technicalities rejoice as on the occasion of the renaissance festivities,
mandolin and spinet explore the Italian eighteenth century, against the
backdrop of the splendid Villa Tallone and valets and ladies in period costume.

devoted audience from all over Italy and abroad and the musicians of
unquestionable international fame, called upon to interpret early music

Having reached the significant goal of the quarter century, it ranges
across literature for plucked instruments between the middle ages and
our times, also moving among the ethnic groups of the most diverse
latitudes. The autumn addition of the Breakfast concerto confirms

More than three centuries have passed since the
public concert scene started to advertise itself on
the London Gazette, thus officially marking the
transition from that original function of social
recreation that linked the artist to lords and patrons
of the arts, to a profession that would witness an
ever increasing number of subscriptions, season
tickets and ticket sales. Today, as then, new listeners
and ever more numerous onlookers are seen to
enjoy the music of art – to use the words of Pollini –
as a demonstration of how much it has to say to our
present time also. And in the concert halls as in the
venues packed with thousands of people, in the

conductors and singing teachers of international fame. There will be three
concerts dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification.

Created to entice the tourist trade of Alta Valle di Susa with the numerous
forms of the theatrical ritual – from quality cabaret to song theatre, from
narration theatre to that of research, from performances for the rising
generations to dance theatre – the festival adopts piazzas, streets and
conventional municipal theatres at an altitude of 1,600 metres.

Theatre in nature is emerging as the most original and artistically productive
characteristic of the festival, which from this edition also takes place in
Valsesia. The connection with street theatre is also confirmed, combining

dell’Arte, with more contemporary languages such as the nuoveau cirque.

From the symposium to the street, from the moving
statues of Egyptian priests to the areas of mobile
screenings, the vocation to figure theatre is ahead
of its time. The besotted guardians of this people
without childhood and without old age, the animators of marionettes, shadows, objects and puppets
have always leant the fingers and the word to beings
in search of a single frenzied reward: an audience of
pointed eyes. By now dismissed the misunderstanding that assimilated the genre to entertainment for
children with a slightly retro flavour or to a popular
performance for a bygone era, it continues to surprise with its extraordinary overlaps with figurative

For Incanti, the year 2011 is quite special, not only for the 150th anniversary
of Italian Unification but also because the festival will be in its 18th year,
reaching the symbolic age of maturity. The event closes the three-year plan
of the Teatro di Figura e Storia and the Incanti Produce project is entrusting
world-famous Hungarian actor, author and director Giulio Molnàr with the
direction of an international group of professionals in the field, who will work
together on the theme of the barricades.

of dance
Different languages of the body are used in an
increasingly incisive way, in constant dialogue with
other forms of artistic expression, from visual arts
to circus juggling, to singing, music and cinema, to
communicate a particular vision of the world: in
recent decades dance has really tried to regenerate
itself, by formulating a new expressive connotation,
which goes beyond the “dance performance” and
veers towards performance action and interdisciplinarity, and thus becoming a sort of workshop of
multiple diverse arts. The Piemonte scene, within
which the opportunities for emersion of young
choreographers through important dedicated showcases have multiplied over the years, is an expression of this changing and multiform reality, with

Torinodanza Festival's broad overview of contemporary dance has helped
reinvent the perception of this discipline as a widespread form of expression,

Festival shows off and develops male and female authors, while presenting in

are filled from early morning to late night presenting the best contemporary

To be able to satisfy our need for cinema, there also
exists a territory less trodden by the public, but still
more incisive and accessible: that of the “out of
format”, rich in creative experiences from unusual
journeys. Its low cost and freedom from media
fragment make the short film a place of linguistic
experimentation, being both an expression of the
author’s views or a bench test for novice directors.
A necessary seismograph of the existing – to use the
words of Gianni Volpi, president of the Centro Nazionale del Cortometraggio (National Centre for Short
Film), who from Piemonte is the Italian referent for
the sector – he asserts that one identifies, in its
variety of approaches, of styles and rhythm, one
common denominator alone: the sensational
pleasure of the viewing, disconnected from the
conditionings of the market.

competitions, training activities, off-screen events and evening screenings in

Asti’s central Piazza della Cattedrale is transformed into a hub for music,
traditions, top quality wine and gastronomy for the whole summer, with a
range of initiatives taking place around it that climax with the Palio horse
race and parties in the city’s various districts. Asti Teatro (June - July) and
Asti Musica (first half of July) see performances from prestigious artists and
prodigious young talents alike, attracting a wide range of spectators.

enchanting setting for many events mirroring the history of our Country

anniversary of the Unity of Italy, will give a voice to the female universe.

Founded in 1950, the Viotti is one of the most prestigious music competitions
in the world for young musicians in their quest for an international music
career. The Final Trials for the piano and singing competitions – which
alternate every two years – will be supported by the Orchestra Sinfonica
(Symphony Orchestra) Carlo Coccia. Alongside the competition, there will
also be concerts and conferences.

The Michele Pittalunga competition is one of the most important and longestrunning classical guitar competitions in the world, and a member of both the
WFIMC of Geneva and the ISPA of New York. In recent years it has also hosted
the Aspettando il Concorso (Waiting for the Competition) festival, as well as
the annual international guitar convention and it also dedicates a section to
instrumental composition. Final round with orchestra.

Interprete), Tecnocasa, Tavagnasco Rock, S.I.A.E. and Finalists (Finalisti).
