First of all, I acknowledge my supervisor Peter Jonker for everything he tought
me, for his availability in finding time for questions and discussion, for his patience with my incurable work-related insecurities and for trying to keep me
in the field of astronomy, which I thoroughly appreciated.
I also thank my promotor Wim Hermsen and all my collaborators and SRON
colleagues. In particular, thanks to Elisa for being so caring since the beginning of my PhD and to Laura, for her company in the last year and a half. I
am also particularly grateful to Yan and Jelle for patiently helping me with
computer issues, and to Rob for supporting me many times through the mysteries of the dutch system. Moreover, a special acknowledgment to Marianne
for translating my summary, but also for her pleasant company during many
hours of observing and traveling. Last but not least, thanks to my fantastic
office mate Manuel, who has always been willing to help me out and cheer
me up with stories and conversations about dreams, crazy people and music.
Thanks for the croissants as well!
This thesis is dedicated to my fiancee Gionata, my oldest friend Monica
and to my parents. To Gio, because he walked with me when I started, and
he carried me to the end. To Mo, because although at a 1000 kilometres away
and in different disciplines, I feel like we got to the end of this PhD together.
To my parents because the reason why I choose astronomy in a first place has
a lot to do with the complementary way in which they tought me to appreciate
nature. Mom and dad, in this occasion I want to thank you particularly for
always being supportive of the choice of coming to the Netherlands, although
it was not an easy one. Despite the difficulties, I think it was worthy.
My acknowledgment also go to Fede, Ila, Claudio, Davide, Mauro, Paola, Lele,
Luca P., Luca R., Claudia e Sara. Thanks because so many of you were always there, for four years, every time me and Gio came back to Italy, and you
never made us feel forgot. An additional acknowledgment to Claudia, Sara
and Monica for being my virtual office mates: it would have been much harder
without your comments here and there across the day, your support and your

irony. Thank you so much! At last, everyone of you who is here today for my
defense should add a further thanks. You will be bored to death, but this day
is a milestone for me and it means a lot that I can share it with you.
Per prima cosa vorrei ringraziare il mio supervisore, Peter Jonker, per tutto
quello che mi ha insegnato, per la sue disponibilita’ nel trovare sempre il tempo
per domande e discussioni, ma anche per la pazienza dimostrata con le mie
insicurezze in ambito lavorativo e per aver cercato di trattenermi nel campo
dell’astronomia, cosa che ho molto apprezzato. Ringrazio inoltre il mio promotor, Wim Hermsen, e tutti i colleghi e collaboratori. In particolare, grazie
ad Elisa per essere stata sempre attenta a me e a Laura per la sua compagnia
nell’ultimo anno e mezzo. Sono inoltre particolarmente grata a Yan e Jelle per
avermi pazientemente aiutata con i problemi informatici e a Rob per avermi
pi’ volte guidata attraverso il sistema olandese. Un ringraziamento speciale
anche a Marianne per aver tradotto in olandese il mio sommario, e per la sua
piacevole compagnia durante le lunghe ore di viaggio o osservazione. Da ultimo, ma non per importanza, grazie mille al mio compagno d’ufficio Manuel,
sempre disponibile a darmi una mano e a tirarmi su di morale con le sue storie e le conversazioni su sogni, gente matta e musica. Grazie anche per le
brioches!
Questa tesi e’ dedicata al mio consorte Gio, perch’ mi ha accompagnata
all’inizio di quest’avventura, ed alla fine mi ha spinta al traguardo, a Mo
perch’, anche a mille chilometri di distanza e in materie diverse, la mia impressione e’ che questo dottorato l’abbiamo portato a casa insieme ed ai miei
genitori, perch’ il modo complementare in cui entrambi mi hanno insegnato
ad apprezzare la natura ha molto a che fare con il fatto che io abbia scelto di
studiare astrofisica. Mamma e papa’, in questa occasione vorrei ringraziarvi
particolarmente per aver sempre sostenuto la mia scelta di venire in Olanda,
per quanto non fosse facile. Nonostante le difficolt’ penso che ne sia valsa la
pena.
Mille ringraziamenti anche ai cari amici che non ho ancora citato: Fede, Ila,
Claudio, Davide, Mauro, Paola, Lele, Luca P., Luca R., Claudia e Sara. Grazie per esservi sempre fatti trovare in tanti quando io e Gio tornavamo in
Italia, tutti i mesi per 4 anni, non ci avete mai fatti sentire dimenticati.
A Sara, Claudia e Monica un grazie addizionale per avermi fatto da compagne
d’ufficio virtuali: soprattutto l’ultimo anno sarebbe stato molto pi’ penoso
senza i vostri commenti qui e la’ nella giornata, la vostra empatia, simpatia ed ironia. Da ultimo, aggiungiamo un grazie a tutti quelli di voi che sono
qui oggi per la mia difesa. Vi annoierete a morte, ma per me questo giorno e’
una pietra miliare e significa molto poterlo dividere con voi.
