Our project’s aim is the study of the structure of Laputa
Island, the floating island which appears in the third chapter of
Jonathan Swift’s novel “Gulliver’s Travels”. The students
conjecture that this island can really float thanks to the
magnetic field, created by the material which constitutes the
core.
Thanks to the help of three professors of Politecnico University
in Milan, among which a Physics professor, the students
establish the impossibility of this movement. It is part of the
research the analysis of sources, knowledges and socialscientific backgrounds which deeply influenced Swift in the
creation and development of this novel. The result is an
attentive analyse concerning all the aspects of this literary
work, from the scientific one to the historical- linguistic one.
Il progetto ha come scopo lo studio della struttura dell’isola di
Laputa, l’isola galleggiante o fluttuante presente nella terza
parte del romanzo “I viaggi di Gulliver” di Jonathan Swift. Le
studentesse ipotizzano che tale isola possa veramente
fluttuare grazie al campo magnetico generato dal materiale
che ne costituisce il nucleo.
Con l’aiuto di tre docenti del Politecnico di Milano, tra cui un
professore di fisica, le studentesse stabiliscono l’impossibilità
di tale movimento. È parte della ricerca analizzare fonti,
conoscenze e background socio-scientifici che hanno
influenzato Swift nella creazione e nella stesura di questo
romanzo. Il risultato ottenuto è un’analisi accurata riguardante
tutti gli aspetti di quest’opera letteraria, da quello scientifico a
quello storico - linguistico.
