Research Activity
Since 2001, when he started to research during his PhD course, Francesco Guerra’s activity has mainly dealt with
information management, and has been oriented both to theoretical, formal aspects in the field of knowledge
representation and to practical issues as the need of interacting with heterogeneous large databases. His main
research interests include integration of heterogeneous information sources, intelligent software agents, Semantic
Web and keyword-base searches. The research has constantly included field test activities through the design and
implementation of prototypical applications which have been experimented in real cases provided by National and
European research projects.
The main topics that Francesco has addressed in his research up till now are:
1. Intelligent Integration of Information and Semantic Web
2. Software agents and data integration
3. Keyword search on structured databases
The main outcomes of the research activities where he has contributed are: (i) MOMIS, a mediator based system for
the integration of structured and semistructured data sources. MOMIS has also been exploited in the Semantic Web,
as a tool for the creation and the integration of ontologies. (ii) RELEVANT, a prototype implementing a set of
techniques for the identification of "relevant values" among those contained in the domain of attributes of data
sources. (iii) KEYMANTIC/KEYRY/QUEST, three keyword based search engines exploiting semantic techniques, a
probabilistic approach based on a Hidden Markov Model and an approach combining semantic and a probabilistic
techniques, respectively.
Francesco Guerra recently promoted a COST Action on Semantic search in structured data sources. The COST Action
was approved on May 2013 (COST IC1302 KEYSTONE - www.keystone-cost.ue) and in October 2013 he has been
appointed as Chair of the Management Committee. The Action includes members from 26 countries

1. Intelligent Integration of Information and Semantic Web
A large amount of structured data is currently available, mainly in relational and RDF formats. To access this data,
users and applications need to use a query language appropriate to the data source in question. This makes data
access a laborious task, since a strong knowledge of the query language is required, and also because the semantics of
the data source contents and structures need to be well understood for formulating any (meaningful) queries. In this
context, the integration of data from heterogeneous data sources is a major challenge that the research community in
databases and artificial intelligence has been addressing. In this area, Francesco Guerra participated in the
development of MOMIS (Mediator Environment for Multiple Information Sources), a mediator system that aims to
provide a uniform interface for accessing and querying heterogeneous information sources. In MOMIS, the integration
of information is semi-automatically performed, by extracting knowledge derived from a structural and lexical analysis
of the sources, by exploiting clustering techniques and Description Logics. The integration process leads to the
definition of a virtual integrated view of the underlying sources where mapping rules and integrity constraints are
defined for managing the heterogeneity of the sources. MOMIS also implements a query manager that allows users to
query the integrated view and to obtain a result in terms of a unified response from different sources.
In this field, Francesco’s research was oriented to the following aspects:
 Definition of the functional specifications of the MOMIS architecture and the development of a wrapper for
the interaction with semistructured data sources;
 Exploitation of a mediator based system in the area of e-commerce. In the e-commerce, companies rely on
different standards for describing the same products. Software applications, typically called marketplaces,
guarantee the interoperability among different standards for representing goods and services. In this area,
the proposal based on the MOMIS mediator system participated and won the challenges published on “IEEEIntelligent Systems” (July/August 2001) and was presented at the first International Semantic Web
Conference;
 Data integration in the case of data evolution. In data integration systems, the integrated view may be
affected by changes in the sources represented (e.g. integrated data sources can change their structure or a
new source has to be added in an integrated system). The Mediator system should manage the dynamics of
the sources, in order to propose an integrated view that is really representing the underlying sources. Some
methodologies for dealing with this issue and updating the integrated view without restarting from scratch
the process when something changes have been developed;
 Exploitation of virtual views built with a data integration system as domain ontologies. This research field is
particular interesting in the Semantic Web, where one of the goals is to make data automatically and easily
understandable by software applications. MOMIS has been exploited as an Ontology Builder and
experimented in the creation of domain ontologies representing a given set data sources and in the
automatic annotation of the sources according to the created ontology;
 Development of techniques for the semi-automatic annotation of sources. The annotation of a data source
according to a lexicon database / ontology allows users and applications to provide a common meaning to
the data represented and to exploit lexical analysis techniques for inferring new relationships among the
sources. The annotation process is typically a manual operation. A technique exploiting and refining an initial
set of annotations manually provided by users to generate new annotations has been proposed;
 Summarization of attribute domains. A deep knowledge of the actual content and structures of a data
source is needed to users for the formulation of effective queries. In this field, we proposed a technique that
analyses the domain of an attribute, clusters the values on the basis of heuristics rules, lexical and structure
analysis, and identifies for each cluster a reference value to be provided to the user as a reference for the
whole cluster. A prototype has been developed and exploited for analysing relational databases and RSS
news. Finally the RELEVANT prototype, joined with MOMIS, has been experimented as an ETL system;
 Integration of data and multimedia sources. The functionalities of MOMIS have been joined with the ones of
MILOS a system for managing and querying multimedia content developed by ISTI-CNR. The result is a tool
allowing users to query data and multimedia sources at the same time;
 Integration of data and web services. Internet can provide data and information through web services. A tool
has been proposed for managing and querying in a unified way data and services. This way, users can
formulate queries and obtain as a result data and services which are related to his request. The research
activity has been jointly performed with the University of Milano Bicocca.

2. Software agents and data integration
He participated in the development of MIKS (Mediator agent for Integration of Knowledge Sources), which is the
implementation of the MOMIS data integration system in a multi-agent system scenario. The goal is to experiment
techniques for improving access and querying capabilities against semi-structured sources.
3. Keyword search on structured databases
The more the relational/structured data complexity is increasing and the user base is shifting towards the less
technically skilled, the more the keyword searching is becoming an attractive alternative to traditional SQL queries,
mainly due to its simplicity. Unfortunately, this simplicity comes with the price of inherent ambiguity. Thus, the
challenge of answering a keyword query over a relational /structured database is to discover the database structures
that contain the keywords and explore how these structures are inter-connected to form an answer. In this field,
Francesco’s research was oriented to the following aspects:
 Definition of the problem and development of a system based on semantic and heuristic rules. The result of
the research activity, (i.e. a joint work with the University of Trento and the University of Zaragoza) is the
KEYMANTIC system, which is able to transform keyword queries into SQL queries without the need of any
information about the data source content. This approach is particularly suitable in scenarios where no direct
access to the data content is provided as in mediator systems or in the deep web.
 Development of approaches based on probabilistic models. The KEYRY system implements a technique for
querying structured databases modelling the process with a Hidden Markov Model. QUEST in addition
combines the probabilistic framework with a semantic approach.
 Evaluation of the keyword search systems over structured databases. There is a lack of standard
benchmarks and metrics for the evaluation of keyword search systems over structured databases. The result
is that each approach has been evaluated against its dataset and its query-set, increasing the possibilities of
bias in the evaluations and making the comparison of the systems a complex task. A joint research activity
with the University of Padua for the definition of datasets and query-sets has been started.
Participation in Projects
Francesco Guerra has participated in several Italian and European projects. Among them:
1) the National Italian PRIN WISDOM (Web Intelligent Search based on DOMain ontologies) project –years
2004-2006, where he worked within theme 1 “Creation and update of a Domain Ontology”; theme 2
“Emergent Semantics: discovering semantic mappings amongst domain ontologies” and he supported the
Project Coordinator during the coordination of the activities.
2) the EU SEWASIE project (SEmantic Web and AgentS in Integrated Economies) - years 2002-2005, where he
worked on WP 1 “Global System Architecture and Software Integration” (where he was WP-leader in the last
year), on WP2 (semantic enrichment and integration), on WP10 (Project management) where he took charge
of the publishing of the final report and the showcase.
3) the EU Project STASIS Software for Ambient Semantic Interoperable Services (years 2006-2009), which allows
SMEs to participate in the e-Economy by offering a coherent set of semantic applications.
4) the National Italian FIRB NEP4B: Networked Peers for Business (years 2006-2009) that developed an
infrastructure to enable companies of any nature, size and location to search for partners, exchange data and
collaborate. He was involved in WP2 Design of single peer functional architecture, WP3 Prototyping and
Validation, WP5 Dissemination and exploitation (Responsible person for the UNIMORE team) and WP6
Project management (where he supported the Coordinator’s tasks).
5) The local project: Searching for a needle in mountains of data (years 2008-2011), funded by the Fondazione
Cassa di Risparmio di Modena, addressing the issue of easily querying a mediator based system.
6) COST Action IC1302 (2013-2017) – KEYSTONE semantic KEYword-based Search on sTructured data sOurcEs,
that aims to establish a cooperative network for promoting the development of a new revolutionary
paradigm that provides users with keyword-based search capabilities for structured data sources as they
currently do with documents. He is Chair of the Management Committee.
