General overview: what is statistics; the concept of populations, samples and randomness; Scientific
Design of medical studies
Descriptive statistics: categorical and numerical variables; measures of location (arithmetic mean,
median, percentiles) and measures of spread (range, variance, standard deviation); some graphical
methods for describing data.
The concept of regression and multivariate analysis
The concept of causality in medicine and the confounding
Phases of an epidemiological study
Characteristics of studies to evaluate effectiveness of health interventions: the experimental and
descriptive study designs
The significance of epidemiological measures of frequency and association (relative risk, odds ratio,
measures of sensitivity, relative risk reduction, absolute risk reduction, number of patients to be
treated to prevent a negative outcome, or produce a positive one)
The requirements of a clinical question
Biomedical databases and Internet resources
The drafting process and quality characteristics of meta-analysis and clinical guidelines
Introduction to principals software available in Windows
Introduction to Excel as spreadsheet software to store and analyze data: import / export data, data
summary and graphics
Using Excel formulas and basic statistical analysis
