SCIENCE-RELATED ACTIVITIES
1992-1993. Short-term contract (3 months) for laboratory work to study the transmission of
viruses in the soil without vectors.
1993-1994. Annual scholarship granted by the Italian National Research Centre (CNR),
Centre for the study of Mediterranean Crop viruses and virus diseases, University of Bari, to
develop a research line on the “Production of monoclonal antibodies to plant viruses”.
Collaboration on a project to characterise some Apulia isolates of Apple Mosaic Virus by the
use of monoclonal antibodies.
1997-1999. Senior consultant at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute (C.I.H.E.A.M.), on a
project to deliver and disseminate organic production methods in Apulia, in the framework of
the Multifund Operational Programme 1994/1999, Measure 4.3.5. Senior consultant on the
analysis of documents and preparation of data sheets on organic agriculture.
2000. Senior consultant on the development of a technical data sheet production and filing
system, in the framework of a Project to set up a national information system in organic
agriculture (S.I.N.A.B.).
2000-2004. Temporary researcher at the Institute of Sciences of Food Production (ISPA) for
the project “Biological control against Orobanche spp. by plant pathogenic fungi and their
phytotoxins”, in the framework of the national project “Useful Micro-organisms and related
metabolites for biological control in plant protection”, funded by MURST.
2001. Permanent researcher at C.N.R.
2002-2004. Participant at COST action 849 “Parasitic Plant Management in sustainable
agriculture”.
2004-2006. In the framework of the European project “Enhancement and Exploitation of Soil
Biocontrol Agents for Bio-Constraints Management in Crops” (FOOD-CT-2003-001687),
assessment and development of a method to apply conidia suspensions to the soil by drip
irrigation; trials to evaluate the application of natural compounds in weed biological control,
focussing on the ability of some aminoacids to inhibit Orobanche seed germination.
2007-2008. Research line, in collaboration with prof. David C. Sands (Department of Plant
Sciences and Plant Pathology, Montana State University, USA), on natural selection of
methionine over-producer mutants by using two fungal isolates (Fusarium sp.), previously
selected for their pathogenic activity against Orobanche ramosa.
EDUCATION
1991. Degree in Agricultural Sciences at the University of Bari, Department of Plant
Protection.
1997. Ph.D. in Plant Protection, University of Bari. Thesis title:”Characterization of different
isolates of prune dwarf virus (PDV) and production of monoclonal antibodies to PDV and
Apple Mosaic Virus (ApMV)”.
2005. CNR training program. Stage at Prophyta company, Germany, on solid state
fermentation technology for production of filamentous fungi.
