Obiettivi formativi: Obiettivo del corso è quello di voler fornire allo studente le basi per la
conoscenza delle cause delle malattie nell'uomo, i processi patologici fondamentali
(infiammazione, risposta riparativa tessutale, tumorigenesi), con particolare riguardo alla risposta
immune ed alla patologia del cavo orale.
The objective of the course is to provide the basis for the knowledge of the disease etiology, the
basic pathologic processes (inflammation, tissue reparative response, and carcinogenesis) from
the molecular and cellular levels to the apparatuses and systems of our body, with particular
emphasis on the immune response of the oral cavity and its pathology.
Risultati d’apprendimento attesi: Alla fine del corso lo studente dovrà saper analizzare
ed interpretare i principali meccanismi patogenetici e fisiopatologici delle malattie umane e
le loro conseguenze. In particolare, dovrà conoscere i meccanismi della carie e delle
reazioni di ipersensibilità del cavo orale.
At the end of the course, the student will know how to analyze and interpret the essential
pathogenetic and pathophysiologic mechanisms of human diseases and their
consequences. In particular, the student will know the mechanisms underlying caries and
the hypersensitivity reactions of the oral cavity.

Programma dettagliato:
1. PATOLOGIA CELLULARE
Danno cellulare e morte cellulare, apoptosi, accumuli intracellulari, adattamenti cellulari
della crescita e del differenziamento.
2. INFIAMMAZIONE E RIPARAZIONE DEI TESSUTI
Recettori dell’immunità innata, segnali di danno, citochine infiammatorie, infiammazione
acuta, esiti e risoluzione dell’infiammazione acuta, Infiammazione cronica, Infiammazione
granulomatosa, infiammazione sistemica, la febbre, le cellule staminali ed il loro ruolo
nella riparazione tessutale, la matrice extracellulare e le interazioni cellula-matrice,
riparazione mediante guarigione, cicatrizzazione e fibrosi, guarigione delle ferite cutanee.
3. ONCOLOGIA
Classificazione dei tumori, biologia della crescita tumorale, basi molecolari dei tumori,
cancerogenesi chimica, fisica e virale, risposta immunitaria dell’ospite contro i tumori,
cancro del cavo orale.
4. IMMUNOLOGIA GENERALE E IMMUNOPATOLOGIA DEL CAVO ORALE
Immunità innata, cattura e presentazione dell’antigene ai linfociti, riconoscimento
dell’antigene da parte dell’immunità adattativa, risposta immunitaria cellulo-mediata e suoi
meccanismi effettori, risposta immunitaria umorale e suoi meccanismi effettori
dell’immunità umorale, immunità mucosale, le barriere della mucosa orale, aree
immunocompetenti del cavo orale, la carie, reazioni di ipersensibilità del cavo orale.
Teaching programme:
1. CELLULAR PATHOLOGY
Cell injury and death, apoptosis, intracellular accumulations, cell adaptation to injury.
2. INFLAMMATION AND TISSUE REPAIR
Innate immune receptors, danger signals, inflammatory cytokines, acute inflammation,
outcomes and resolution of acute inflammation, chronic inflammation, granulomatous
inflammation, systemic effects of inflammation, fever, stem cells and their role in tissue
repair, the extracellular matrix and the cell-matrix interactions, repair through healing,
scarring and fibrosis, healing of cutaneous wounds.
3. ONCOLOGY
Classification of tumors, biology of the neoplastic growth, molecular basis of cancer,
chemical, radiation and viral carcinogenesis, immune response of the host against
neoplasia, cancer of the oral cavity.
4. GENERAL IMMUNOLOGY AND IMMUNOPATHOLOGY OF THE ORAL CAVITY
Innate immunity, capture and presentation of the antigen to the lymphocytes, recognition
of the antigen by adaptive immune cells, cell-mediated immune response and its effector
mechanisms, humoral immune response and its effector mechanisms, mucosal immunity,
barriers of the oral mucosa, immunocompetent areas of the oral cavity, dental caries,
hypersensitivity reactions of the oral cavity.
